The Hugo Awards 2011:
WE HAVE TO GET GARCIA A NEW T-SHIRT!
This past weekend saw many, many conventions. In Baltimore, the Harvey Awards reached their culmination. In Anaheim at D23, Disney leaked all kinds of fanboyish goodness by taunting people with footage from The Avengers (footage they deigned not to bring to Comic-Con).
But none of that holds the personal candle we had in Reno at Worldcon 2011. That's right -- the award that every good fanboy and fan girl hears about first in their development -- the HUGO AWARDS, recognizing achievement in Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Why did we have a personal stake in this? Because contributor Christopher J. Garcia, eight-time Hugo nominee, had been nominated for a ninth and tenth time as "Best Fanzine" -- for his 'zine The Drink Tank -- and "Best Fan Writer."
Apparently, the ninth time is the charm. You may read on other sites about famous writers and famous projects winning the prestigious Hugo Award, but none will go the lengths we will to celebrate this one.
CHRISTOPHER J. GARCIA HAS A HUGO!
He has won for "Best Fanzine," breaking his streak and forcing a replacement of his t-shirt that read "Six Time Hugo Loser" which he could be seen wearing at conventions. He is now a winner!
And on that note, he owes us a wrestling column...
