Cumberbatch Vs. The Federation
Benedict Cumberbatch.
If you don't know his name, you'd better learn it. And if you don't know his name, then you haven't watched Sherlock, the fantastic update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective. And if you don't know which detective we mean, you clearly stumbled here by accident.
Quietly, he has taken over fandom -- not only will he be appearing in the next Star Trek film, but he's also voicing Smaug the Dragon in the two-part Hobbit saga. It's only a matter of time before he develops superpowers.
And as for that mysterious Star Trek role, here's fuel for the fires of speculation -- MTV got two pictures from the set of the film that nobody not involved seems to know much about. We don't have a title, we don't have a plot synopsis, and the belief that Cumberbatch might be Khan is a specious rumor that started when Benicio del Toro was cast in the same mysterious role that Cumberbatch now has.
Here's what we can say from these pictures: Cumberbatch gets into a fight of some kind with at least two members of the crew of the Enterprise, slipping free of Spock's (Zachary Quinto) Vulcan nerve pinch before facing down Uhura (Zoe Saldana), herself armed with a phaser.
Oh, and he's apparently wearing a black Federation uniform, similar to the one Kirk (Chris Pine) wore through most the action in J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek.
