Dreamworks and Netflix Tease New ‘Voltron’

The hold Voltron has on a generation is undeniable. And this week, Dreamworks Animation has confirmed what has been teased for a while: Voltron will return, this time on Netflix. According to the short Dreamworks press release, Voltron: Legendary Defender will feature “…a mix of action, comedy and an epic storyline spearheaded by yet-to-be-announced veteran animation talent and longtime Voltron fans.” From the reaction on my Facebook feed from animation professionals, there’s a lot of excitement within the industry — people hoping to get to work on this series that inspired them as kids.

Dreamworks will be releasing more information in the days ahead, no doubt building to a frenzy of excitement among fans. Their press release also promises “…the new series will delight audiences old and new.” Count me as new. While it’s hard NOT to be aware of who Voltron was, it was another series that hit during my college years and so sort of went past me. But if it hooks my kid…

Whether you’ve noticed or not, the Dreamworks Television Animation partnership with Netflix has produced some terrific stuff. With a labor of love like Voltron, that’s going to continue. Now if maybe they could do something like Astro Boy, they’d really have my heart.
