Marvel Announces Cosplay Variant Covers!

Another sign of times changing — and it’s cool. If ever you needed proof that cosplaying has become firmly entrenched as a major part of the comics industry — here it is. Marvel has embraced it.

Beginning in October, Marvel will be releasing cosplay variant covers for 21 of their new post-Secret Wars first issues.

Better, they’re crediting each cosplayer whose photographs and costume creations they’re using. (I don’t know if they’re getting paid.)

To the right I’m focusing on Miss Kit Quinn, because we’ve run her work before in her webseries “Sweethearts of the Galaxy,” and I did meet her at Big Wow! Comic Fest last spring. We’ll always try to spotlight Friends of Fanboy Planet. (So trying to make that a thing…)

These covers, and these costumes, look great, and showcase a heck of a lot of creativity.

From Marvel:

You’ve seen them at conventions, now see them on the covers of some of Marvel’s newest comic titles later this year! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your new look at the upcoming COSPLAY VARIANT program. See your favorite Marvel characters like you’ve never seen before, as mighty Marvel fans bring them to life for 20 exciting covers!

“Cosplayers are taking over,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Each convention I go to, it seems like there are more and more fans dressing up like their favorite Marvel characters. These homemade, hand-crafted costumes are so elaborate, it looks like they leapt off the comic page. The Cosplay Variant initiative is our way of supporting a community that supports us.”
