Come Play In The DC Universe For Free
(But You're Welcome To Pay)
Sony Online Entertainment has announced that they're switching to a new model for the fun but troubled DC Universe Online. Some time in the near future, the game will be playable for absolutely nothing.
Before current subscribers get upset, note that Sony has a super-special level of "Legendary" status which will no doubt lure a few more people in. If you pay $15 a month, you have access to expansion areas, powers, items and possibly explanations of continuity that those "free" players will not have.
In addition to Legendary status, Sony will offer a median Premium level for $5 (or more) that's more a one-time start-up fee and gains you more access than the free players.
For both Free and Premium, expansion areas will be available for a small cost to be named later.
So... what does Free get you these days? Missions, battles, and the like for player levels 1 through 30, which honestly is going to be just right for the casual gamer like myself who would love to be a superhero, but only has time for flights of fancy for a few hours a month.
Events already in place look to be staying for the free players, and that includes a Green Lantern-centric area (from our time in the Beta, let us note that the Yellow Lantern Corps is TOUGH!), possible Eclipso (not calypso) tie-ins and who knows from here?
