Creating The Slayer Man

Creating the Slayer Man

He’s strong to the finich ‘cuz he eats his radioactive spinach, but which meddling outsiders will he finish first? The answer to that question has to wait until March 21st when Popeye the Slayer Man gets released in theaters and on VOD. But I did get to ask other questions of writer/director Robert Ryan and Jason Stephens, the actor who puts the pop in Popeye.

We talked a couple of weeks ago, covering their long history collaborating on movies. That’s longer than you might think: it goes back to the 4th grade. Little did they dream they’d grow up and help Popeye through the public domain milestone of becoming a horror icon. Inspired by Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, Jason Stephens just may be on to something in carving his own mark on that sailor man.

Strong to the finish
