In a crowded marketplace, making a splash with a young adult fantasy graphic novel can’t be easy. But indie creator Curtis Clow and his collaborator Jo Mi-Gyeong gathered enough momentum from Kickstarter to complete five issues of Beastlands: Keepers of the Kingdom. Enough momentum, in fact, to get the attention of Dark Horse Comics.
The veteran publisher has gathered the series together into a trade paperback landing in your local comics shop at the end of June, with wider distribution to other bookstores and Amazon in the middle of July, just in time for Comic-Con. Curtis joined me for a conversation about Beastlands, why Kickstarter is the way to break in to the industry, and what else we can expect from this up and coming talent.
