Yes, Russell T. Davies has Doctor Who fans dancing. Are they dancing with the Doctor or the devil? When Neil Patrick Harris is involved, that might be a tough choice. Harris will be featured as the antagonist in an episode we now known is called “Wild Blue Yonder,” the second of three special episodes to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. While the final dates have not been announced, we do know that David Tennant has returned to play the 14th Doctor who looks much like the 10th Doctor. He can actually do a crossover with himself! He’ll be joined by Catherine Tate as 10th Doctor companion Donna Noble, and one of these specials will feature the last performance by the late great Bernard Cribbins.
The episode titles are “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle,” which makes some comics characters television canon. It’s going to be an interesting 60th anniversary…
For those not 100% clear on how the show programs itself, it’s not technically an “episode.” The BBC refers to these as “specials,” as instead of hour-long episodics that we can call a season and the BBC calls a series, they’re really 80+ minute long television movies. When we’re lucky, they even get programmed through Fathom Events.
What’s also not clear from the BBC Studios announcement is which US streaming service will carry these. It’s been unclear for a while if the shift to Disney+ would include these specials or if they stay on BBC+ and BBC-America. We do know that Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor will be lighting up Disney+.
