George Takei Graphic Memoir Coming in June

It Rhymes with Takei

Now more than ever, stories like George Takei’s have to be told. Not the story of Star Trek, though that’s a small part. His life story, living and working as a gay man both closeted and later openly. Top Shelf Productions has teamed with Takei to produce the graphic memoir It Rhymes with Takei, a follow-up to They Called Us Enemy, his memoir of growing up in the Japanese internment camps during World War II.

Reunited with the creative team from that powerful work, Takei moves beyond young adulthood into his life as an activist. Harmony Becker, Steven Scott, and Justin Eisinger collaborate to bring this full-color graphic memoir to life. Top Shelf describes it as “…a kaleidoscopic portrait of one iconic American navigating LGBTQ+ history.”

The publisher’s further description:

George Takei has shown the world many faces: actor, author, outspoken activist, helmsman of the starship Enterprise, living witness to the internment of Japanese Americans, and king of social media. But until October 27, 2005, there was always one piece missing—one face he did not show the world. There was one very intimate fact about George that he never shared… and it rhymes with Takei.

Now, for the first time ever, George Takei shares the full story of his life in the closet, his decision to come out as gay at the age of 68, and the way that moment transformed everything.

Takei now presents a charismatic, candid, and deeply personal witness to how far America has come… and how urgently we must fight to defend that precious progress.
