What classic character is left to write after you’ve tackled Uncle Scrooge? Apparently, you have to cross swords with Conan the Barbarian. In this case, King Conan, whose tales take place after Conan has experienced much. Jason Aaron has been announced as a new writer in The Savage Sword of Conan, Heroic Signatures & Titan Comics’ brilliant effort at reviving the classic Marvel black and white magazine. It pushed boundaries in the 1970s; now in the direct market, it’s just good comics.
Aaron has written this era of Conan before, the last time Marvel had the license. But Heroic Signatures (owners of all the Robert E. Howard characters) has somehow found a way to inject new life into an already lively character. Plus the artists — everybody wants to draw Conan.
The Savage Sword of Conan #5 features the first chapter of Aaron and artist Geof Isherwood’s two-parter, with a back-up Young Conan story from writer Michael Kogge and artist Dan Parsons. The legendary Joe Jusko contributes cover A, while the great Alex Horley provides cover B. (I’m looking for A at my local shop, because few can beat Jusko at painting dinosaurs.)
That’s 64 pages for $6.99, hitting shops on October 24, 2024!
