Since Christmas decorations will start going up November 1st, you bet September gets to celebrate Halloween. Creator David Hartman got into the full swing of things on September 1st with his latest Kickstarter. Maybe you want to join him at the Drive-in–the Monster Drive-in. That’s the name of a planned series of graphic novels, though each one will be a stand-alone wild, way-out story. Dedicated to the grindhouse horror films of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Monster Drive-in goes just beyond where those movies couldn’t afford to go. Because it’s comics.
Launched last week, Hartman unleashed the promise of Isle of Evil. No lie here; I would absolutely watch this on Joe Bob Briggs’ Drive-in and then probably get tired of Joe Bob’s comments and just seek out the movie by itself.
Monster Drive-in: Isle of Evil follows
…Captain Pickles, a grizzled boatman who ferries a trio of party-hungry girls to a remote island for a beach bash. But the island is cursed — crawling with flesh-stitched abominations, voodoo-controlled undead, and two rival mad scientists battling for control.
And if you think no one would have made a movie that over the top in the 1960s, think again.
In the press release, Hartman says, “I made this book for the kid in me who stayed up way too late watching creature features—drawn to the monsters, the mayhem, and the raw imagination behind it all. This isn’t just a tribute; it’s a heartfelt thank you to the wild horror stories that shaped me.”
If you can’t take Hartman’s word for it, how about horror legend Rob Zombie? He enthused, “David Hartman’s Monster Drive-In is everything you need! In a world of nonstop generic superhero nonsense this will melt your dying brain with monsterific mental madness! Get it now!” Luckily, that was in a press release and not in my face. I’m pretty sure I would have been massively intimidated.
Once again, you can journey to the Isle of Evil on Kickstarter right now!
