It may be hard to explain why the Miracleman 0 line-up matters so much. It may be hard to explain to younger readers why Miracleman matters so much. Like Watchmen, Miracleman changed the landscape of comics. Under the revival by Alan Moore and Garry Leach, it just seemed like a fresh take on an old idea. But then Moore and Leach took further steps out of bounds, with some art giants stepping in from arc to arc. Suddenly this was a book not afraid to explore the real world consequences of this magical hero revealed to be a scientific experiment.

Middle-aged Mike Moran discovers that his childhood fantasy life may have been real. Saying the magic word “Kimota!” turns him into an unaged supergod, who both is and is not Moran. There are more like him out there, and one has not had a happy upbringing. In an age where The Boys made it to television, the devastating moments of Miracleman might play out as quaint. Even Man of Steel borrowed from it. One of the greatest comic book sagas of the 20th century, Miracleman was plagued by legal issues, publishers folding, and… more legal issues. So the arc carried by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham was never finished.
Until… 2023? In 2022, we’ll see an all-star line-up of talent revive the magic, and carry it over to Gaiman and Buckingham’s return. Before Comic-Con, Marvel announced this project. Last week, they finally gave us the details. Do you hear… thunder? Because I do.
