We’ve had collectible variations on Monopoly, Clue, and other board games for years. Still, it was startling for me a few months ago to attend Comic Con Revolution in Ontario and find a dealer with several cute Ouija boards. My wife assured me they were hand-made, so their reach was limited.
Now I’m not so sure.
The OP Games, chief driver of IP mash-ups in board games, just announced a timely Beetlejuice rebranding. Not of Clue, not of Monopoly (though it does exist), not even of Risk. It’s the Ouija Board. Fun for 2-4 players for 30 minutes or more — maybe eternity! At least they specified at least 2 players must be present. I’ve seen too many movies where playing alone causes trouble.
According to the press release, this version has the added rule of saying Betelgeuse’s name 3 times in order to summon the spirits. Sure, I haven’t seenĀ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice yet, but I’ve seen the movie several times, along with the Broadway musical, and I’m pretty sure that doesn’t end well. They’ve added the warning that things might get a little …strange.
Yes, OP games, promotion through understatement is the way to go.
This provides me with the opportunity to share stand-up Chris Calogero’s bit about Ouija boards, from his new album “Husky Boy.” That’s how spooky this all is — Chris released his album yesterday at the same time The OP Games made this announcement.
Tell me THAT’S not a supernatural coincidence.
