Quesada Covers Marvel Girl

Quesada covers Marvel Girl

This news item from Marvel reminded me of two things. First, hey, that’s right, Jean Grey was Marvel Girl before she was Phoenix. That’s how I first encountered her, back in Origins of Marvel Comics. Second, holy cow, I keep forgetting that Joe Quesada stepped down from running Marvel years ago and that damn, he can draw.

Sure, part of me always knows both those things, but in the grand scheme of things, they just remind me how fast time goes by. Anyway, I’m all for Quesada providing beautiful covers or pin-ups for Marvel, as long as it doesn’t take his focus away from Amazing Comics. Because I’m heavily invested in wearing the baseball cap he gave me last summer at SDCC, and I need people to understand how truly good those comics are going to be.

From Marvel:

Joe Q is back! In the coming months, fans can look forward to seeing influential creator and former Marvel Comics Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada’s iconic artwork on some of Marvel’s hottest titles, starting with a variant cover for PHOENIX #11 in May.

Quesada’s dynamic cover depicts Jean Grey in her beloved Marvel Girl costume, a throwback to simpler times as Jean currently traverses the stars as a cosmic hero. PHOENIX #11 kicks off an all-new arc of writer Stephanie Phillips’ hit run where she’ll be joined by new series artist Roi Mercado. The story reunites Jean with a long-lost loved one in a startling resurrection that throws everything Jean knows about her cosmic power into question!

Quesada’s cover will also be available a virgin cover. Keep your eyes peeled for more Joe Quesada variant covers to be revealed in the weeks ahead!
