When you’re an upstart publisher full of comics powerhouses, you come up with bold moves, not bad ideas. Especially when making a splash at Comic-Con. Ignition Press has done just that. Sure, they’ll have panels this weekend as part of Comic-Con, with plenty of excitement for readers and hopeful creators. But don’t go looking for them on the convention center floor; they’re not there.
Yet they are here.
Instead of being lost in a crowd, the Ignition Press Room sits in the heart of the Gaslamp District at 643 G Street, open with free admission to the public starting today from 9 am – 5 pm PT, then running Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you RSVP at ignitionpress.myflodesk.com/freetoken you will receive one free token for the Ignition Press Room gachapon machine that features exclusive stickers, enamel pins, and rare “Golden Tickets.”
What might those stickers, pins, and whatnot be for? Some intriguing books from some top creators. Creative Director Jeremy Haun’s The Beauty has already been published through Image, but is being republished by Ignition Press. In September, he’ll follow up with an intriguing book called Murder Podcast with artist Mike Tisserand. And there’s more from talents such as Cullen Bunn and David Baldeon.
Jeremy Haun, about to do Murder… Podcast
Just yesterday they announced that Wizards of Waverly Place creator Peter Murrieta will be writing a new title for the imprint.
Over the last two decades, Murrieta has produced more than 300 hours of television, including
hit shows “One Day at a Time” (Netflix), “Lopez” (TV Land), “Superior Donuts” (CBS), “Cristela”
(ABC) and “Primo” (Amazon Freevee), which enjoys a rare 100% freshness rating on Rotten
Tomatoes. His extensive experience and commitment to creating shows that serve as star
vehicles for LatinX actors that also achieve mainstream success is second to none in the industry.
Murrieta, who’s Mexican American, created the acclaimed WB series “Greetings from Tucson,” a
groundbreaking series that was one of the first ever to feature a diverse, bi-racial family, set in
Peter’s native Arizona.

More than any other producer in Hollywood, he has developed projects that have contributed to
the careers of the industry’s biggest Latino stars, including George Lopez, Gabriel “Fluffy”
Iglesias, Cristela Alonzo, Mario Lopez, Justina Machado and the legendary Lupe Ontiveros,
among others. Murrieta is currently developing an adaptation of the novel “Blood and Gold: The
Legend of Joaquin Murrieta,” which he co-wrote with the novelist, Jeffrey J. Mariotte, in addition
to his to-be-announced comic series from Ignition Press.
They may be new this year, but next year Ignition Press should still be burning things up at Comic-Con — and hopefully your local comic shop.
In addition to running Fanboy Planet, Derek has contributed stories to Arcana Comics (The Greatest American Hero) and Monsterverse Comics (Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave). He has performed with ComedySportz, City Lights Theater Company and Silicon Valley Shakespeare, though relocated to Hollywood to... work in an office? If you ever played Eric's Ultimate Solitaire on the Macintosh, it was Derek's voice as The Weasel that urged you to play longer. You can buy his book "I Was Flesh Gordon" on the Amazon link at the right. Email him at [email protected].
