Though comic shops have occasionally served as set pieces in sitcoms, we haven’t seen the day to day of a comic shop be a sitcom. Until now. Writer/producer/director/actor Cheyenne Ewulu kickstarted a six episode first season of The Comic Shop last year, and was able to debut the trailer at an SDCC panel, Making A Maverick: Creating Art Outside The System.
Panel moderator Kevin Smith dubbed The Comic Shop “…fucking funny,” giving Ewulu the spotlight to talk about her journey to make this vision come to life. So look for Smith to appear in season 2.
The Comic Shop is a workplace mockumentary about a group of friends doing their best to keep their local comic store afloat by any ridiculous means necessary. The cast features Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Craig of the Creek), Shanae Cole (Grown-ish), Grayson Niles (The Goldbergs), and Cheyenne Ewulu.
Produced under Ewulu’s Awkward Virgo Productions, the series was fully crowdfunded via Kickstarter, raising over $200,000 to bring the six-episode season to life. It is now one of the most-backed TV projects in Kickstarter history.
Let’s be clear, too, that YouTube has pretty much established itself as a TV streaming network. Though it’s almost exclusively independent creators rather than a “network,” its viewership is almost twice that of Netflix as of June, and that’s only increasing. Heck, I watch YouTube on my TV, so it’s just another service — but one with more Ultraman. That’s a long-winded way of saying this isn’t a web series. The Comic Shop is a TV sitcom. One I can’t wait to watch, but have to, because it doesn’t hit YouTube until August 29, 2025, free to watch on the Awkward Virgo TV channel: youtube.com/@AwkwardVirgoTV.
Full disclosure: Yes, I did back this on Kickstarter because it sounded like a good idea. It still is.
