It’s not an ongoing series; it’s a facsimile edition of a 30-year-old book. But what a book!
During the short-lived Amalgam Age of Comics, when Marvel and DC heroes didn’t just collided but merge, Karl Kesel and the late Mike Wieringo merged the Amazing Spider-Man with Connor Kent, the Superboy of the time. The result was the sensational Spider-Boy!
Though a complete omnibus edition of the Amalgam Age came out last fall and quickly sold out, Marvel calls this particular facsimile a way to get ready for the Deadpool/Batman and Batman/Deadpool crossovers coming later this year. Sure, but Spider-Boy #1 isn’t quite a crossover; it’s a melding of heroes. So might the character play a key role in one or both of the upcoming crossovers from the two mighty publishers?
Regardless, any potential to get a simply fun comic book in the hands of new readers is welcome. Any chance to celebrate the work of Mike Wieringo, an artist gone way too young, is also welcome. Go to your local comic shop and ask for this one by name.
From Marvel:
After almost thirty years, SPIDER-BOY #1, one of the all-time great DC/Marvel crossover comic books, will be boldly re-presented in its original form – ads and all—in SPIDER-BOY #1 FACSIMILE EDITION!
On sale in October, SPIDER-BOY #1 FACSIMILE EDITION reprints SPIDER-BOY #1 by writer Karl Kesel and artist Mike Wieringo.
