Filmmaker Eric D. Howell had a dynamite, award-winning screenplay on his hands with The Revolution of Cassandra. Inspired by both his experiences making documentaries around the world and films like Romancing the Stone, Howell knew people liked the story. But strangely enough, the studio criticism was “it has too much of an opinion.” To get it out to the masses, Howell went from screenwriting to graphic novel writing.
While caught in the crossfire of a raging civil war, a patchouli-wearing, humanitarian must save her tomboy sister from the firing squad by beseeching help from a right-wing gun-smuggler, and changes the entire course of the war by inadvertently starting her own revolution.
Cassandra is the dread-lock & Birkenstock equivalent to Lara Croft. An action-romance is in the tradition of Jumanji, The Lost City, and Romancing The Stone. A female Don Quixote living life as it should be. A story about using your voice for what you believe in, not screaming about what you’re against!
Next week at San Diego Comic-Con International, all six chapters of The Revolution of Cassandra will be available at the Bliss on Tap booth, #5533. Each issue contains two chapters and retails for $5.99. THIS week, you can watch my conversation with Eric about his inspiration, the perils of pivoting from filmmaking to comics, and using your voice.
In addition to running Fanboy Planet, Derek has contributed stories to Arcana Comics (The Greatest American Hero) and Monsterverse Comics (Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave). He has performed with ComedySportz, City Lights Theater Company and Silicon Valley Shakespeare, though relocated to Hollywood to... work in an office? If you ever played Eric's Ultimate Solitaire on the Macintosh, it was Derek's voice as The Weasel that urged you to play longer. You can buy his book "I Was Flesh Gordon" on the Amazon link at the right. Email him at [email protected].
