A couple of months ago, Dark Horse announced an original graphic novel from Eisner Award-nominated artist Tony Parker, promising to turn the myth of Medusa on its head. Or many snake heads. Diving deep into mythology and tying many cultures together, Medusa feels like Tony Parker unleashed. Though you can see influential touches here and there, it’s all Tony taking a classical approach and yet bursting all the seams.
I can say that because though I’m not ready to write a review, I just read the graphic novel and I need a hard copy to spend time poring over the pages made all the more vibrant by Tamra Bonvillain’s lush coloring and Taylor Esposito’s multi-faceted lettering. It’s clear Tony has more adventures in mind for the classical hero — yes, hero — and the proof is right here.
Dark Horse offered the internet a special 8 page look at Medusa that isn’t in the graphic novel. This is the original 8 page sample he submitted to pitch the book, a one-shot story that sums up the character’s tragic fate thanks to a curse from Zeus. It also proves that Medusa can connect to many cultures — any cultures, really. This short takes place in Kenya; the majority of the graphic novel calls Scotland its Earthly root.
