Lionsgate Uncages Big Freaking Rat

Lionsgate uncages Big Freaking Rat

Sometimes a movie gets released and deserves more attention than it got. That seems to be the case with Big Freaking Rat, which may be the Citizen Kane of giant rodent movies. Unless you count Mickey’s Christmas Carol. Originally released in 2020, this movie that seems destined to divide my household came and went, but Lionsgate knew that 2025 would be the year of the rat. Actually, it’s the Year of the Snake, but with a rat this big, who’s going to argue?

Horror movies should reflect their times, and this trailer pushes the right buttons: problems with county parks, toxins polluting said lands, and of course, big freaking rats running rampant. Your mileage may vary.

In general, we’re overdue for a giant “insert small creature here” movie. Not having seen it yet, I have hopes that Big Freaking Rat provides the right balance of horror and comedy in the vein of Big Ass Spider and Eight Legged FreaksYes, it should be stupid, but smart stupid.

From Well Go:

Experience a hairy tale of horror with a comic twist. Ranger Brody believes looking after his teenage niece and nephew will be the biggest challenge of the summer until his brand-new campground is turned into a den of terror by a massive mutant rat. Years of dumping toxic waste into the land have created a monstrous rodent with a taste for blood, and now it’s up to a reluctant band of warriors to exterminate the beast.

Written and directed by Thomas J. Churchill, Big Freaking Rat stars Caleb Thomas, Nino Aldi, Bob Barnett, and Caroline Abbott. The 85-minute horror comedy will be available on demand and digital (no physical media yet) on April 29, 2025.
