Something about the work of writer/artist Cynthia Buhler keeps drawing me in. It’s not the salaciousness so much as the ability to meld it with historical fact so smoothly. Minky Woodcock crossed paths with Houdini and Tesla, so when you suggest to me that Minky Woodcock meets Lovecraft in this next installment? Minky Woodcock wasn’t a real person, her adventures are outrageous, but Buhler’s characterizations of real people just click. And who can resist a sexy magician detective anyway?
So for the third arc, Minky Woodcock: The Girl Called Cthulhu, we’re going to learn a bit about a long-lost incident from World War II. Just as with Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, exaggeration for dramatic and mystic effect will be great. But I suspect so will the book be — great. As Blake Edwards put it in the underrated Sunset, it’s all true give a take a lie or two.
The first issue hits stores October 16, 2024!
