For old and new fans, Marvel’s latest take on an Ultimate Universe has been exciting. For each month between issues of any title, a month has passed. We’re seeing a world built in real time. Yet I’m disappointed to find out Marvel plans to continue it past its alleged deadline.
Hear me out: what has made it great is knowing that each title has a plan, moving inexorably toward the return of the Maker. That villain, a survivor of the first Ultimate Universe, made this world in his image. And yet heroism finds a way. Despite the best efforts of the Maker’s agents on this Earth, he’ll face opposition on his return.
That real-time build, that knowing there’s an ending — that’s part of what has made it so exciting. Even when it’s not obvious how it’s all going to tie together, as with Peach Momoko’s excellent and excellently weird Ultimate X-Men. So when Marvel touts that October covers prove the Ultimate Universe is just getting started… I’m sure they’ll still be good books, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see some creative teams change. They’ll have just lost some of the energy that made the whole thing work. As happened with the first Ultimate Universe, as happened with the New Universe (though maybe that never quite worked), and happened with DC’s Earth-2 books.
I expect that DC’s current Absolute Universe will also have an end, as much as they’re killing it right now. Licensing forbids that Darkseid stays dead forever. The Maker, though, he hasn’t quite made the same impression in popular consciousness.
We’ll give it a chance, though, won’t we?
From Marvel:
Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is heading towards a major turning point that will impact all five of its current hit ongoing titles and set the stage for the line’s exciting future!
Upon his return, the Maker will quickly discover the universe he so meticulously crafted has been thrown wildly off course! The rise of new super heroes has brought hope to his corrupt world, but the Maker’s renewed presence will evolve the stakes beyond anything anyone could imagine and usher in all-new eras of bold Ultimate storytelling. With these startling developments on the horizon, it’s the perfect time for fans to see why this new line of books have taken the industry by storm.
Today, peek ahead with the reveal of all the Ultimate issues coming this October!
