Steven Prince Kickstarts Mercy: In Prison

Steven Prince Kickstarts Mercy

You wouldn’t think that watching Full House reruns would inspire a gritty supernatural take on the “women in prison” genre, but stranger things have happened. Creator Steven Prince (Monster Matador) took a quote from the family comedy and ran with it — right into a Filipino monster.

Mercy: In Prison marks a slight departure for Prince, after years of dealing with monsters in Mexico. Designed as the first in a series of one-shots, the book features an ordinary young woman who has been framed as a drug mule. While serving a sentence in a labor camp, she encounters an aswang, a vampire-adjacent monster from Filipino mythology that’s… well, let’s just say it’s a sloppy eater for now.

We took some time last week to talk about the book, the reasons for Kickstarting, and should you be drinking wine while reading it.
