Dead Men Sing No Christmas Carols

Dead Men Sing No Christmas Carols

It’s that time of year, when the world seems a-glow… and Hallmark has released its Keepsake Ornament Wishbook. As always, their tree ornament offerings combine cutesy kitsch with fandom fantasy, ranging from twee to terrifying.

More terrifying, and that’s not Hallmark’s fault, prices have gone up this year. But if you’re a collector, you’ll still have to spend some time deciding. I’ve tried to wean myself off a bit, because I can only fit so many trees in my living room. Maybe you have more space. Let me not lie; I’ll still buy a bunch.

How can you resist when something like these can be had? If you’re a Pirates of the Caribbean fan (the Disney attraction, not the movie), Hallmark has the set for you. Perfect to sit beside your Haunted Mansion light and sound storytellers, Hallmark has three ornaments that communicate with each other when connected by the same Keepsake Power Cord™ sold separately.

The descriptions say they’re plastic, and that’s a trend I noticed in the last couple of years–the ornaments have become lighter weight, but details have also become a little less defined. From the photos here, though, these boney buddies seem to be at least as accurate as the model kits from the 1970s.

If Hallmark keeps up their tradition, next year may see more pirates that join this crew. Especially likely as part of the narrative includes sound clips of Bill Nighy (or a sound-alike) as Davey Jones, an addition to the attraction guests don’t always get to see active. There’s still room for a full-blown rendition of “A Pirate’s Life for Me.” So climb aboard but beware–there be ornaments ahead. At least these don’t depend on a heavyweight tree topper to activate.
