At WonderCon, one of the events is a pro/hopeful pro meet-up. Somehow despite having a graphic novel published on Comixology, Omar Morales sat on the same side of the table as I did. We introduced ourselves and he handed me a postcard for his book Major Thomás.
Yes, the musical allusion is purposeful. What got my attention was an all-hispanic crew of creators. Seeing an inspirational and aspirational graphic novel aimed at an underrepresented community, I knew we had to talk further. I read the book and saw a lot of places from my own childhood represented pretty accurately, even though the book is set in the future. Then the real hard science fiction kicks in…
Thankfully, we were able to connect and talk last week. Morales did mention that a publisher has picked up Major Thomás for print in January 2027. But he’s right; you should read it now.
