A New Video For The Monkees – Using Their Old Dell Comics

Yes, The Monkees are back: Michael Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz, and Peter Tork have reunited for a new album, and Rivers Cuomo has written them a classically Monkees song. “[amazon text=She Makes Me Laugh&asin=B01ESAYWQU].” Aside from being a fun, poppy song — the kind the group is often remembered for, though there’s a lot of deeper stuff in their catalogue — the video also pays homage to their younger days and their fallen member, Davey Jones.

And here’s the connection to Fanboy Planet: using panels (possibly randomly assembled) from The Monkees comics from the 1960s, published by Dell Comics, this video highlights MonkeeMania. There’s even a few panels of MonkeeMan (Peter). Poking around the internet, the art credits are either Sal Trapani or Dick Giordano on pencils, and it looks suspiciously like Bob Oksner inking. UPDATE: Thanks to Tom Galloway for suggesting it’s actually mostly art by Jose Delbo, with possible panels by Trapani, Giordano, and Frank McLaughlin. UPDATE 2: Scott Shaw! confirms that all the art is by Jose Delbo.

So how long before somebody gathers a nice hardcover of 1960s Dell “Teen Idol” comics?
