Clifford Meth has been around in comics. If you haven’t heard his name, it’s because for much of his career, he’s been a ghost. But the people who knew him were glad they did. I first encountered Clifford when my friend Jason Sacks sent me an interview with Harlan Ellison… about Clifford Then I read some of his dark fiction in a collection called God’s 15 Minutes, and we had an extensive email interview.
Then Dave Cockrum, co-creator of some of your favorite X-Men, got sick. Very sick. And Marvel wasn’t helping with his medical bills while both Marvel Animation and 20th Century Fox had turned his characters into household names. Meth reached out to me to help publicize the efforts that he and Neal Adams were doing to fix that. It was a landmark event for creators’ rights, and made it easier for the next time a comics creator would need help to overcome the pittance they’d earned on lucrative IP.
Now Meth is preparing his memoirs in collaboration with Danny Fingeroth, and we’re starting a series of conversations about his work and his friendships in the comics industry and beyond. Enjoy Part 1.
