It’s not a done deal. But there seems to be movement toward Warner Bros.’ now infamous Coyote vs. Acme seeing a 2026 release. The catch? It won’t be from Warner Bros. It will be from Ketchup Entertainment — the same unaffiliated company that released The Day the Earth Blew Up and Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
Everybody’s IP is for sale. It just takes the right price. Because even with Variety’s brief report on this, the stakes of Hollywood Studio accounting seem crazier than a… well, a Looney Tune. In a move reminiscent of the actual film’s plot (hapless “creative” vs. soulless corporation), Warner Bros. shelved the film for a tax loss of reportedly $30 million. Though last year, when talent involved with the film caught wind of this plan, the studio allegedly shopped it around to be released by another company. A deal could not be reached (rumored that the asking price was $70 million, essentially the film’s reported budget).
Now Variety suggests that the asking price is near $50 million, and Ketchup Entertainment is willing to pay it. It does have built-in marketing — at least in L.A. — and stars John Cena, Will Forte, Lana Condor, and Kelsey Leos Montoya as “Man Who Screams at Gossamer”! That remains my favorite film credit I’ve seen in the 2020s.
I really don’t understand the logic of the tax write-off but still being able to sell it the next year, but hey, if that means I get to see a film I’ve been waiting 8 years for, let it happen!
Now let’s see Batgirl…
