Why would Frank Miller want to come back to Marvel? Honestly, he’s one of the few creators in 2022 whose name may be as well known as many of the publisher’s characters. To the general public, he’s the guy behind 300 and Sin City, and somehow, everyone seems to know about The Dark Knight Returns. He’s only dipping the smallest of toes back into the Marvel Universe by drawing a cover. And that’s definitely a favor to Marvel.
Until this announcement, I didn’t realize that Fantastic Four was getting a relaunch, though I did know that Dan Slott was wrapping up his run on the book. As The Immortal Hulk proved, when a creator leaves an iconic mark on a book, it makes sense to set that run aside and start anew. It’s much easier on the trade paperback bookshelves, which is still the more likely place for the general public to find it.
Getting Frank Miller to draw The Thing — is this the first time? — makes a splash. Writer Ryan North and artist Iban Coello will no doubt do something cool with Marvel’s first family, but an ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing by Miller gets attention.
That’s a new Fantastic Four #1 coming in November, with a variant cover by Miller to drive people into their local comics shop. (The main cover is by some guy named Alex Ross, and it will no doubt be beautiful.)
