Toho revealed the teaser for Godzilla Minus One today, and it’s chilling. After letting Warner Bros. play around with the King of the Monsters, Toho has brought the greatest of all kaiju back to Japan. It doesn’t seem to be connected to Shin Godzilla; in the hands of writer/director Takashi Yamazaki it looks far more frightening. And whether it’s through Fathom Events or not, Toho makes it clear we’re getting a US release! Godzilla Minus One opens in Japan on November 3, with a nationwide release in the US on December 1.
Having just gone back and watched the 1954 Gojira, I can say the pure terror has gotten diluted over the years. There are shots in that original that chilled me to the bone. There’s a tremendous historical context that most of us in the US never really got, but this new teaser offers a couple of glimpses. This isn’t destruction for fun; there’s a wrath of nature coming down hard.
And that title… calling it Minus One really creeps me out. Thank you, Toho, for the early Christmas present.
