Joey Esposito Balancing the Dark and the Light

Balancing the Dark and the Light

At the risk of sounding like a Jedi, good writers tap into the dark and light within themselves. The fabled two wolves may be fighting for dominance—especially in these times—but a writer calls forth whichever wolf a story needs. So comics creator Joey Esposito can write Sesame Street comics, various Power Rangers books, and one of my favorites of last year: The Pedestrian.

And then he releases Madam into the world. What if Mary Poppins were evil? That question serves as entry into Madam, one of the strongest horror graphic novels I’ve read this year. In collaboration with artist Pandamusk, Esposito delivers a book that’s dark, a little sexy, and a lot terrifying.

We connected last week to talk about Madam and The Pedestrian. Along the way, we dove into some of the challenges of getting noticed in an increasingly fractured marketplace. Also, where can you find The Pedestrian outside of a convention? At Joey’s KoFi site for one, but also available on GlobalComix.com. (Madam will also be serialized issue by issue there.)
