A few months ago came the exciting news that writer Steve Niles and writer/artist Shannon Eric Denton had struck a deal with Dark Horse to publish comics from their Monster Forge Productions. Since then, we’ve seen teases and we’ve heard theme songs. From rumblings around conventions, it’s clear a horror comics anthology will be coming. But last week we got confirmation of a new graphic novel.

Monster Born teams these two horror vets with another whose work never disappoints: Tom Mandrake. Though Dark Horse’s press release mentions his work for dark DC superheroes — superlative, yes — he’s a master of horror in general. Check out his new collaboration with J.M. DeMatteis at Spellbound Comics.

We’re a little over halfway to Halloween, and for horror fans, it’s almost like Christmas.

From Dark Horse Comics:

Dark Horse Books presents Monster Born, a new supernatural graphic novel by Steve Niles (A Town Called Terror, Criminal Macabre), and Shannon Eric Denton (Monster Forge Productions, Army of the Dead) with art by Tom Mandrake (Batman, The Spectre) and colors by Michael Atiyeh.

Amanda Lam always finds herself fighting. Humans or monsters—it’s what she knows best. Kidnapped by an undead creature as a child, she had to fight to survive and eventually fight for her freedom. Since then she has vowed to eradicate the world of the kinds of monsters that caused her so much pain. But when the mother and father she never knew die, her life becomes entangled with her family in ways more complicated than she could imagine.

Monster Born TPB collects 96 pages, measuring 6.625 x 10.1875”. It comes out from the cover of darkness and arrives in bookstores October 31, 2023 and comic shops November 1, 2023.
