SDCC 2022: Simu Liu Flips For Funko

Simu Liu flips for funko

Seemingly left out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe announcements on Saturday, Simu Liu gave it all for the Funko Pop! Talk panel. As he pointed out, however, it sure does look like he might be needed for a few of those films. After the former accountant was wheedled into providing tax advice you should not listen to, he proved that he was ready for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars as well as wherever else Shang-Chi might need to be in Phases 5 and 6. UPDATE: Let’s say at least for The Kang Dynasty because Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton will be helming that one. And I can hardly wait!

After that impressive display, Liu talked about learning to speak English from the Star Wars and Jurassic Park franchises as a child immigrating to Toronto, Canada. As he pointed out, though, he didn’t see many characters there that looked like him, so it’s a special thrill to be part of a wave now for the next generation of kids dreaming of what they might be. (Of course, you can read that said more eloquently in his best-selling memoir We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story.)

He’s already represented by a few Funko Pops!, and perhaps his appearance here will inspire another. There was a little more controversy involving the Pops! themselves after the panel, but I’ll report on that when things become clearer and not just gossip and rumor.
