There Can Be Only One

After six movies, three TV series, and an upcoming remake, you’d think you know Highlander. According to Titan Comics, you’re wrong. In November, they’re releasing a graphic novel adaptation of the original screenplay to Highlander by Gregory Widen. And while I’m not positive it will be wildly different, it will differ enough that this is really the only “new” Highlander project I’m interested in.

Full non-important disclosure: Highlander was the first movie I saw a test screening. Few movie moments have locked into my memory as strongly as Connor (Christopher Lambert) and another Immortal pulling their swords out in a parking garage. The audience gasped and howled with the laughter that says “RAD!” (It was the 1980s.)

When the movie came out in theaters, it had few changes, most notably in clarifying what “The Prize” was. A couple of years ago I talked about it on the Matinee Heroes podcast.

There Can Be Only One

While that movie is cool, I’m intrigued to see how it was told by Widen originally. Titan Comics will release it to bookstores and comic shops in November; that’s a long time to wait. But when you look at the preview art they sent, it’s going to be worth it. Artist Szymon Kudranski has Lambert down cold. Since the source material is different, this seems more like what Legendary has been doing with one key likeness for Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Phantom of the Opera. Though in the preview art, the character I assume is the Kurgan does still sort of look like young Clancy Brown. We’ll see.

From Titan:

This lavishly illustrated volume (art by Szymon Kudranski) presents the immortal saga of Connor MacLeod as it was first imagined – long before it became a cult-defining cinematic classic. Spanning centuries of history, epic duels, and shadowed rivalries, Highlander: The Original Screenplay follows Connor’s journey across eras as he faces other immortals in a deadly contest for a mysterious and ultimate prize.

Returning to the story’s roots, the graphic novel offers fans a rare chance to experience Widen’s original narrative vision in full, capturing the mythic scale, tragic romance, and operatic violence that made Highlander a cultural touchstone.

There Can Be Only One

“I have been a fan of Highlander since what feels like the dawn of time, so it’s a genuine thrill to bring this story back as originally envisaged by the man who created it all, Gregory Widen,” said Jonathan Wilkins, the editor of Highlander: The Original Screenplay. “For the first time, readers will be able to experience this epic adventure set across the centuries. It’s been a genuine thrill to work with Gregory to discover the various avenues his story explored before filming began. So get ready to visit the blood-stained highlands of the mid-1500s and the seamy streets of New York of the early 1980s for a spectacular take on an immortal tale!”

There Can Be Only One

With dynamic artwork and a cinematic sense of scope, Highlander: The Original Screenplay stands as both a celebration of the franchise’s origins and a thrilling new entry point for readers discovering the immortal legend for the first time.

Highlander: The Original Screenplay is on sale November 17, 2026!
