Young Witches and Forbidden Fruits

Young Witches and Forbidden Fruits

The timing of Forbidden Fruits might look a little awkward. Mall culture may be a thing of the past, and with the revelations coming out in the news the past few weeks, I’m not sure that a certain kind of mall store will stay around much longer. Though maybe the store Free Eden bears no resemblance to stores living or dead.

This film has a strong pedigree, actually adapted (perhaps liberally) from Of the Women Came the Beginning of Sin, and Through Her We All Die, a stageplay by co-screenwriter Lily Houghton. Considering that Diablo Cody has come onboard as a producer, I’m getting strong The Craft meets Jennifer’s Body vibes. That’s a good thing.

Though IFC sent the trailer out saying “Happy Galentine’s Day,” Forbidden Fruits won’t land in theaters for a month. After a SXSW screening March 17, it gets a wide release March 27 (though the tease poster says March 20). If you’re as intrigued by this film as I am, you can apply HERE to join the Free Eden family. (I didn’t, because I don’t think I’d be a good fit.)

From Shudder/IFC:

Free Eden employee Apple secretly runs a witchy femme cult in the basement of the mall store after hours – with fellow fruits Cherry and Fig. But when new hire Pumpkin challenges their performative sisterhood, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate.
