For years, the comics collaboration between writer David Avallone and Mistress of the Dark Elvira has been fruitful. They’ve teamed on many mini-series from Dynamite Comics, navigating a fine line between fearsome and funny. Okay, more funny. Last week Dynamite announced something different.
Avallone teams with the woman behind Elvira, Cassandra Peterson. The project? A graphic novel adaptation of the first part of Peterson’s memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira. Titled Yours Cruelly: Becoming Elvira, the adaptation promises to be fun. If you’ve read the memoir, you can guess even at times jaw-dropping. (Fanboy Planet is an affiliate of Bookshop.org–if you purchase Peterson’s memoir through the link on this site, it may generate a commission for this site and credit to Vroman’s Bookshop.)
We sat down to talk about the book, its secret sneaky predecessor, and how David Avallone became David Avallone, Comic Book Writer. The interview was edited for length. A bonus outtake will show up… soon. Only appropriate for the story of how Avallone is adapting only part of the story…
