Cult Filmmaker Brings a Manga Legend to Life

Cult Filmmaker brings a manga legend to life

Don’t go hunting for the original manga of Go Nagai’sĀ Lion-Girl, There isn’t one. When writer/director Kurando Mitsutake met with Cleopatra Pictures, he wanted to do something to honor one of his artistic heroes. Imagine his surprise when the master offered new concepts and drawings for an original character — while still giving Mitsutake room to bring his own sensibilities to it.

The resulting film will see release in Japan in January, but you can see it at home in the U.S. now. Mitsutake dialed in last week to talk aboutĀ Lion-Girl, pandemic perils, and working with a hero’s vision.

Lion-Girl, written and directed by Mitsutake, stars Tori Griffith and Derek Mears.
