Marvel Offers First Look At ‘Red Wolf’ #1!

From the first glimpse of Red Wolf in an “All New All Different Marvel” teaser, this book has had controversy. Red Wolf’s initial costume was a stereotypical 1970s design, bare-chested, loin-clothed and brightly festooned with feathers and animal skins. Marvel listened to the complaints, and the version being shown here seems much less like a bad stereotype.

Marvel hasn’t shaken the controversy, though. At this point, we can only say rumors, because no solid evidence has been presented — rumors abound about the behavior of series writer Nathan Edmondson. We have no first-hand knowledge; we’ve read the same articles everyone else has. We do not know that it is true. But the rumors may be enough to change your interest in this book.

Which might be a terrible shame, because it does look good. In many ways, this “All New All Different Marvel” really does seem committed to inclusiveness, but more importantly, committed to actually doing good books that happen to reflect inclusiveness instead of being sops to complaints.

Can we separate a creator’s alleged behavior from his work? (Is it good work? I don’t know yet. I haven’t read any of it.) SHOULD we separate a creator’s alleged behavior from his work? I just don’t know. I can only say that I like everything else about this title, and wish that there wasn’t any controversy — but I would not be happy with running this site if I pretended the controversy wasn’t there.

From Marvel:

The Marvel Universe’s American Southwest has a hero to call its own! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your first look inside RED WOLF #1 – the brand new ongoing series from writer Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow), artist Dalibor Talajic (Master of Kung Fu) and cover artist/series consultant Jeffrey Veregge!

The frontier boomtown of Timely has more than its share of scoundrels, and it’ll take a hero to keep them in line. A hero named Red Wolf – the Cheyenne who crossed the desert and stood up to Mayor Wilson Fisk and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the fallen Sheriff Steve Rogers. But that’s all in the past. Following the events of Secret Wars, he’ll find his boots firmly transplanted into the Marvel Universe. In a world chock full of super powered heroes—and villains – Red Wolf is going to need all his wits and both his fists to serve and protect.

This December, the tale of how Red Wolf won the West begins in 1872, but his journey will take him farther than you ever thought possible. Don’t miss the bombastic debut when RED WOLF #1 comes to comic shops and digital devices!
