It took far more than five nights, but Five Nights at Freddy’s is finally hitting the big screen. The hit independent horror video game has had a huge amount of lore and licensing. There’s been a graphic novel, a novel, and many stops and starts. Of course, there have also been influences on other horror films — The Banana Splits Movie was rumored to have started as a 5NAF adaptation, until creator Scott Cawthon walked away. Willy’s Wonderland is fun, but largely in a “what if Nicolas Cage was in Freddy Fazbear’s overnight?” way. Even Key & Peele borrowed a bit for their film Keanu.
Nothing beats the real thing. Unless Charles Entertainment Cheese wants to throw his hat in the ring. Finally, Cawthon and Jason Blum have teamed to bring the film we knew Cawthon had in him. The talent on and off screen should make you sit up and take notice. Director Emma Tammi has been building a good reputation with both The Wind and Blood Moon. The Jim Henson Creature Shop is bringing these characters to life. And it’s just good to see Josh Hutcherson onscreen. Even if I’m not sure he’ll survive one night at Freddy’s, let alone five.
If you don’t know anything about the plot, you still know it in your bones. It made for a simple but ingenious game; it should make for a scary and fun Halloween picture. On October 27, you’ll visit Freddy Fazbear’s restaurant in either theaters or streaming on Peacock. (Yeah, I know the tagline is Can you survive, but that’s not the right question…)
