In part 1 of our conversation, creator Chris Robinson talked about his Werewolf Frankenstein world. It’s fun stuff. Yet while developing that, he also tackled an important piece of comics journalism — reproducing the first (and only) issue of All-Negro Comics from 1947. Like many comics from the time, superheroes were only a tiny part of the book. Aimed at illuminating black voices in comics when that was basically unheard of, it was groundbreaking, historic, and fairly quickly squelched by bigger companies.
The characters fell into the public domain, but Chris went back to the source. Last November Image Comics released All-Negro Comics with a “2nd issue” edited by Chris. We talked about it as well as the brilliant John Jennings’ recent updating of the one superhero character from the book, Lion Man.
Enjoy the interview!
